Haircut

I am particular about two things in life - coffee and haircuts.

In college the best barber in town was Nazi Bob. While cutting my thick blonde brush he would try to recruit me for the local clan. The only reason I would tolerate the awful tirades against the world was his skilled and stead hand with scissors followed by the straight edge razor for a clean up of my neck.

A few years back I heard that men who were more evolved, had a longer linage in the gene pool, were the ones you see going bald. A much less evolved man like myself is cursed with thousands of thick strong follicles over every inch of my head. Something passed down from the Swedes or Scots, perhaps something combined.

There have been many bad haircuts. Ever year or so the need to search new barber chairs comes up as one shop closes, someone retires, or I move to another area. This last round was particularly painful as I spent much of last summer with a military crop top and my pack of uncooked hotdogs hanging from the back of my neck.

To my delight there is a place where all three barbers onsite do solid work. It beats the uncomfortable wait for one barber over another, or to poke my head in only to have to return the next day for the cutter I like.

These three are close to the house. The shop is filled with photos of past presidents and historical times.

While getting my three week trim from a woman in her mid 50’s it occurred to me that the usual belly brush I get when a barber needs to get in tight, I heard a sloshing sound. I believe that a colostomy bag brushed me.

The other barber was looking through the early edition paper from November 22, 1963. He had found it in a trunk of historical documents his stepfather had left behind. The top three stories from that early paper included “63,000 Automotive Jobs to be Lost due to Automation”, “Healthcare only for the Wealthy”, and “Congress Split”.

He also held the late edition in his hand. The black and white photos of Vice President Johnson being sworn in next to Jackie on the plane were above the only story for that issue.
